Life Style / Wine Grapes / Kerner: Moderately hardy grape developed from a cross between the Riesling and Trollinger varieties by the Weinsberg/W?rttemburg State Wine Institute, Baden (De). The latter variety is better known as the Schiava Grossa where grown in the Alto Adige region of Italy. Used to produce a Riesling-like white wine said to often reach 'Auslese' Pradikat quality. Regarded by many as having superior characteristics to the Bacchus or Optima grapes. Currently, 1997, recommended for good site locations in southern Michigan and other suitable cool-climate regions where it usually fully ripens in mid-season.
