Hybrid Formation

For instance, the Middle English word povreliche appears in the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. This adverb is a hybrid formation, with the first half (povre) coming from the French word for 'poor.' The suffix -liche is of Germanic origin and it equates to modern English suffixes -like and -ly.
