Foul Papers

Entertainment / Literature / Foul Papers: Rough drafts of a manuscript that have not been corrected and are not to be sent to the printers. They are typically full of blotted out passages and scribbled revisions. Some of Shakespeare's surviving manuscript variants theoretically might be the result of the difference between his foul papers and 'fair copy' (see above). Unfortunately, no definite sample of Shakespeare's foul papers actually survive to the present day except a possible autograph in the play Sir Thomas Moore.
