Focalization

Entertainment / Literature / Focalization: Dutch literary theorist Mieke Bal coined the term focalization to describe a shift in perspective that takes place in literature when an author switches from one character's perspective to another. She preferred the term focalization to the more traditional phrase 'point-of-view' because the term called attention to the way a reader's focus shifts even as the point-of-view shifts. The term has become widespread in the school of literary theory known as narratology.
